MeHAF's Mission and Values

The Maine Health Access Foundation's mission is to promote access to quality health care, especially for those who are uninsured and underserved, and improve the health of everyone in Maine.

As a statewide organization, we serve all Maine people, yet our programs are particularly focused on the most vulnerable - those facing disproportionate barriers accessing health care services and achieving optimal health.

MeHAF uses our human and financial resources to achieve our mission.  The staff at MeHAF bring a range of expertise and skills to the foundation's work, resulting in thoughtful and creative programming.  Each year we provide approximately $4 million in grant and program funding to support activities aligned with our mission and strategic funding priorities.  Since 2002, MeHAF has awarded more than $44 million in grants and program support to more than 250 organizations across Maine.

As an independent and visionary leader in health philanthropy, we are committed to advancing these guiding values as we work with our nonprofit partners and key leaders in the public and private sector to

  • act as a catalyst for change;
  • promote innovation and vision;
  • foster community-based collaboration and partnerships;
  • serve as an informed convener and educator;
  • exercise responsible stewardship.

MeHAF was legally incorporated in April, 2000 following the sale of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine to Anthem.  This sale provided $82 million that served as the foundation's initial endowment.

MeHAF is an independent private nonprofit health foundation, and has no affiliation with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine.
